Fluvial Sediment Yields in Hyper-Arid Areas, Exemplified by Nahal Nehushtan, Israel

چکیده
Floods rarely occur in hyper-arid deserts and little is known about the magnitude frequency of sediment delivery from their basins, despite importance to changes landscape, infrastructures engineering activities. Sediment yield Nahal Nehushtan watershed (11.9 km2) located Timna Valley southern Israel was determined by assessing stratigraphic sections its 60-year reservoir deposits. Stratigraphic correlation between event couplets allowed for quantification yields representing 13 former flow flood events. Based on volume reservoir, 29.8 t km?2 year?1 average specific one lowest among other studied warm deserts. Among layers, thickest layer, deposited a flash caused single short rain event, contributed 31% total yield. sedimentation watersheds several areas Middle East North America, we demonstrate that increases with drainage area as expected mean annual frequency. Our quantitative results, together previous studies areas, provide complementary evidence fluvial transport—the main landscape designer landscapes.

Impact of Climatic Change on an Arid Watershed: Nahal Yael, Southern Israel
The Nahal Yael basin is underlain chiefly by schist, amphibolite, and granite. Thin (generally < 1 m thick), grussy colluvium which covered the lower portions of granitic hillslopes in the late Pleistocene has now been stripped completely, causing marked contrasts in outcrop morphologies, even where there is no contrast of fracture density or petrologic characteristics. Formerly mantled slopes ...
متن کاملEstimating fluvial sediment transport: The rating parameters
Correlations between suspended sediment load rating parameters, river basin morphology, and climate provide information about the physical controls on the sediment load in rivers and are used to create predictive equations for the sediment rating parameters. Long-term time-averaged values of discharge, suspended load, flow duration, flow peakedness, and temporally averaged values of precipitati...
متن کاملFluvial sediment flux to the Arctic Ocean
The paper presents an overview of recent publications on the fluvial suspended sediment flux to the Arctic Ocean. The total suspended matter exported from the Russian territory is 102×10 t/year and from the Canadian Arctic is 125×10 t/year. The total suspended matter (TSM) flux to the Arctic (227×10 t/year) is very low, only about 1% of the global flux. Mean concentrations of suspended matter a...
متن کاملGrain size distribution effects on phosphate sorption by fluvial sediment: implications for modelling sediment- phosphate transport
A sensitivity analysis was performed on a sediment-phosphate transport model by determining the phosphate sorption characteristics of separated size fractions and prepared size distributions of fine-grained ( < 64 jum) river sediment typically transported in two southern Ontario streams. The Langmuir equation was used to quantify phosphate release from the sediment. Results of the study indicat...
